Florin Japanese American Citizens League (JACL)
Resolution Supporting the Chinese Victims of
Japan's Wartime Atrocities
Adopted December 3, 1998
- Whereas, the military government of Japan committed innumerable
documented atrocities about World War II against innocent civilians
in China known as the "Rape of Nanking";
- And Wheras, the government of Japan, even to this day, has not
taken responsibility for its wartime actions by clearly making an
apology, acceptable to the victims, and paying reparations;
- And Whereas, even the government of Germany has taken
responsibility for the atrocities committed by the Nazis against the
Jewish people during World War II, apologized, and paid reparations;
- And Whereas, many Chinese Americans in the U.S. and their
families, part of today's Asian Pacific American community, were
among these victims and are currently seeking support;
- And Whereas, Japanese Americans were also innocent victims of
World War II, interned by the war hysteria, racism, and the failure
of political leadership in America;
- And Whereas, some people unjustifiable identify Japanese
Americans with the actions of Japan today, as they did for the
wrongful wartime actions of Japan before;
- And Whereas, the Florin Japanese American Citizens League (JACL)
is a community & civil rights organization that supports many social
causes, including the successful campaign to secure an apology and
reparations from the U.S. government for the unjust treatment of
Japanese Americans;
- Be It Resolved, that the Florin Japanese American Citizens League
(JACL), on humanitarian grounds, supports the innocent civilian
victims of Japan's wartime atrocities in China, a clear apology from
Japan, acceptable to the victims, and reparations;
- And Be It Further Resolved, that the Florin JACL supports efforts
by the U.S. government, such as Congress' HCR 126 this past year, to
call for such an apology and reparations from the government of
Japan;
- And Be It Further Resolved, that the Florin JACL endorse
educational efforts, such as "Forgotten Holocaust" exhibits, to tell
the truth about these wartime atrocities.
